If you’re staying in the city for the August long weekend, there’s plenty happening in Regina and Saskatoon to kick off the last month of summer. Staying home can be the best of both worlds — you can rest, relax, catch up on life, and enjoy some fun out and about in the city, too! Take in Regina and Saskatoon’s local offerings and events, and make the most of this August long weekend in the city.

Max Out Your Long Weekend in Regina

Queen City Ex: The Queen City Ex is happening over the long weekend, from July 31 to August 4. There will be food, rides, entertainment, local vendors and special events, including the Queen City Ex parade, the Pile O’ Bones rodeo and Agribition, which features interactive agricultural fun.

City Square Plaza Mobile Eats: Kick off your long weekend with Mobile Eats, which runs on Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and brings you all of Regina’s best food trucks in one place. For other weekend food truck options, check out the Regina Farmers’ Market outdoor market on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Outer Edge Adventure Park: Only a 30-minute drive from the city in the adorable town of Lumsden, lies the Outer Edge Adventure Park. It’s a great place to add some thrill to your weekend with family fun. Outer Edge has zip lines, a climbing wall, hiking, kid-based activities and tons more to keep you busy.

Twilite Drive-In: Plan a fun trip for an afternoon or evening movie to Twilite Drive-In, located in Wolseley, Sask, just over an hour drive from the city. Check them out on Facebook for their movie schedule, and grab takeout from your favourite local restaurant for the drive — or the movie!

Wascana Lake: Enjoy Wascana Lake, but this time, from the water! Wascana Centre Marina offers canoe, kayak and paddleboard rentals, ranging from $15-$20 per hour. Wascana Lake means you can have a small taste of the outdoors and lake life, but still stay within city limits. Pack a picnic and make a day of it!

Long Weekend Vibes in Saskatoon

Rotary Ribfest: Saskatoon’s annual Rotary Ribfest runs on from August 2-5 and brings you four days of delicious barbeque at Diefenbaker Park. This event features some of Canada’s top ribbers, live entertainment, a kid area, and food and craft vendors too. Admission is free.

Shift’s Buck-a-Shuck Oysters: Start the weekend in style at Shift Restaurant in the Remai Modern, overlooking the South Saskatchewan River. On Fridays, starting at 5 p.m. Shift does $1 oysters with the purchase of a bottle of wine. Oysters and wine with a view? Sounds like a dreamy way to kick off the long weekend!

Blackstrap Provincial Park: Plan a day trip with family or friends to Blackstrap Provincial Park, only a 35-minute drive from the city. At Blackstrap, you’ll find picnic and playground areas, the beach, fire pits and plenty of room to fish, boat, canoe, hike, bike and swim. If you want to make a night of it, tenting sites are available, too.

Nutrien Fringe Theatre Festival: YXE’s annual Fringe Theatre Festival lands on the long weekend this year and there’s tons of local theatre and performances to keep you occupied all weekend. Check out the Intro to the Tango event running on the long weekend as well; this breathtaking dance performance at the Broadway Theatre is a must-see!

Wild Weekends at the Zoo: Check out the Saskatoon Zoo Society’s Wild Weekends event on Saturday, Sunday and the long weekend Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wild Weekends focuses on learning about animals, and it’s a great event for families and kids. Have a picnic or hot dog roast at the Forestry Farm to cap off the day and enjoy some nature.
