Award-Winning Design in Sophisticated Nurseries
A child’s nursery might seem an unexpected room to be described as sophisticated or elegant, but the two co-owners and principal designers of Atmosphere Interior Design feel lucky to have designed just that.
Trevor Ciona and Curtis Elmy recently envisioned first bedrooms for a little boy and his older sister at a gorgeous home on Saskatchewan Crescent West in Saskatoon. These nurseries — each with a touch of whimsy — are across the hall from each other.
“A nursery is a great example of how we tackle a room and our process. In this case, we were renovating the home’s interior and exterior and our client likes a traditional aesthetic with modern efficiencies. We kept a connection with the bones of the house at every step of the project,” says Curtis.
A big part of Atmosphere ID’s success is the firm’s turnkey design services. “We are there for every step of the process with our clients. In the case of the two nurseries, we also had to keep in mind that children grow up quickly and the rooms need to stay visually interesting. Our client was very organized and fully committed to the selection process.”
The steps involved for Atmosphere ID include sitting down with a client to discuss overall feel, colour choices and areas of the room to highlight. Curtis encourages clients to bring in images that inspire them, but to be mindful that too much inspiration can be overwhelming.
“Trevor and I help the client to narrow options for colours, wallpaper and fabrics down to the leading contenders. We also consider actual pieces of furniture that would be a fit with the design vision for the room. We’re diligent and we want to exhaust all options before our client makes the ultimate decisions and, when they cannot make that decision, we gladly give the final direction.”
Curtis and Trevor focus on “using pops of colour and patterns, or the layering of monochromatic luxurious textures.” They encourage clients to be brave and try wallpaper for the warmth and layering it can bring to a room. “Also, don’t focus on trends but be conscious of them,” says Curtis. “When new introductions flood the market place, zero in on just the ones that speak to you rather than being caught up with what everyone else is doing.”
Atmosphere ID’s services include interior and exterior design, floor plans and elevations, space planning, finish details, custom upholstered furnishings, new builds and existing home renovations for both residential and commercial projects.
The team’s work has been featured in House and Home, Style at Home, Western Living and most recently in Home Beautiful Australia and Deco Home Magazine in Germany.
