Dandy’s is Heating Up Regina’s Ice Cream Scene
It might have opened in the dead of winter, but Dandy’s Artisan Ice Cream is proving itself to be one of Regina’s hottest spots as the weather gets warmer.
Dandy’s opened in south Regina earlier this year, offering a different take on everyone’s favourite summer treat. The shop creates handcrafted ice cream using seasonal, local ingredients. The flavours are so much more than the usual chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry (although they do still offer more classic options for you purists!). Coconut Ash Honeycomb, Cereal Milk with Caramelized Bananas, and Rosemary Caramel Popcorn are just a few of the shop’s signature flavours.
The shop’s flavours frequently change, with four to six new seasonal flavours each month. Dandy’s offers new options to complement the produce that is in season and to address the flavours their customers are craving.
They aren’t a chain; they are locally owned. Although owner Daniela Mintenko hails from Colombia, her husband was raised in Regina and both of their influences are evident in Dandy’s flavours. Daniela has always been passionate about ice cream.
“Ice cream is a very common dessert in Colombia, and it’s often homemade with exotic local produce,” says Daniela. “So, I’ve been an ice cream fanatic from a very young age. I learned the science part of making ice cream at Penn State University, and then realized I needed even more training to really focus on creating ice cream inclusions, like waffle cones and cookies, brownies, and other toppings. So, I headed to the Northwest Culinary Academy in Vancouver to complete a diploma in pastry and culinary arts!”
What is Daniela’s favourite flavour? The Blueberry Pie Crumb. She hadn’t had blueberries until her family moved to the United States when she was 14 years old and it was love at first taste! Whatever Dandy’s doesn’t create in-house, they work with local companies to create. They also offer vegan and gluten-friendly options without sacrificing flavour or texture.
When you walk into Dandy’s, it feels like a classic ice cream shop, but with a modern, fresh, and clean twist. The way Dandy’s goes about business also brings it into the modern world, using compostable to-go packaging and reducing waste by recycling and finding ways to reuse or compost food waste and scraps.
The staff is friendly and willing to take the time to let you try out new flavours and create your perfect dish. Dandy’s offers the option for customers to mix it up with sundaes and milkshakes they can create themselves. Plus, while waiting to order or while enjoying your ice cream, you can see the treats being created before your eyes through windows into the Dandy’s kitchen.
If you want to get your fix without leaving the comfort of your own home, Dandy’s has you covered. Customers have the option to take home pints of their favourite flavours. Seasonal, local, and tasty — Dandy’s Artisan Ice Cream satisfies more than just your taste buds.
