Designer Janis Procyk: Find Your Own Style
Why are we so obsessed with the latest styles, colours of the year, newest products, and “best” brands? As someone who has studied fashion design, I suggest that we ignore trends. You may want to look effortlessly flawless like magazine models, but I am here to tell you to stop. Trends and fast fashion are getting completely out of hand. We don’t need to have a new wardrobe every month.
So what do we do then? Stop buying clothes? Absolutely not. Take a look at your wardrobe. Find out what colours and styles you are attracted to. Even if it’s 20 years out of “trend,” or you’re still secretly holding on to 10 pairs of neon crocs, do what works for you.
I will go first. Shown here are pieces that I make and sell, and what I gravitate towards for my wardrobe. These are pieces I wear regularly.
Next, seek out local designers and stores who you can build a relationship with. Focus on what you like. Don’t be intimidated; we’re here to make you feel your best, not criticize what you are wearing. We are living in this province with you. We know what the weather is like. We know the demographics of people living here, and we are here to put you into clothing that holds up over time and makes you feel your best.
Feeling good in your outfit will give you more confidence to put your best foot forward. Local designers and shops can help you get there.
