Family Feud Debuts in Canada!
Are you a fan of Family Feud? After 40-plus years of running in numerous countries around the globe, the popular game show will air on CBC starting in December 2019. Like the American original, the format involves two families competing against each other to guess the most popular answers to audience surveys. There will be a mix of standard Family Feud questions as well as many Canadian-specific questions, and every answer on the board is provided from previously surveyed Canadians. There is a nightly $10,000 prize, and families can stay on for up to three episodes in a row if they win, for a chance at a total of $30,000.
Actor, comedian and well known Mr. D star, Gerry Dee is delighted about hosting the show. “It’s a show I grew up on. I know it very well, so it was a really exciting call to get. Sometimes, you get offered a project and you know if it’s right or wrong; this was an automatic yes for me. It’s kind of right in my wheelhouse; there’s a lot of improvisation and there’s thinking on your feet. It’s about family and I’m pretty much a big family guy, as people know. It just feels right up my alley. It’s a good fit.”
Gerry Dee also believes Canadians are thrilled about the show coming to this country. “Now you can see your neighbours on it; you can be on it; friends from school can be on it. As big as Canada is, it’s also very small. You get a family from Regina on there and it’ll be fun for the people of Saskatchewan or Regina to watch and cheer them on. So, hopefully we’ll meet some families from your province and region very soon. I don’t have a clue who the families are, but I’m excited to meet them.”
Online applications for this season were open across Canada until September 1, and during auditions, families of five competed against each other in a mock game. Family members had to be over the age of 18, and display personality, energy, enthusiasm and an ability to play the game.
The premiere season of Family Feud Canada officially started taping with selected families in front of a live studio audience in November in Toronto, and will include 60 episodes. So, gather your family around the TV this winter and enjoy some good-old-fashioned fun watching an iconic game show — Canadian style!
