Get to Know Trina Johnson, Owner of Trinos Menswear
At Refined, we recognize the importance of local businesses in our community. They are the engine that makes our economy run — employing people, taking risks, meeting market needs, and supporting important causes. So often, we only see the business — the storefront, the products, the services — and never really get to know the business owner behind the scenes making everything happen. Refined is proud to profile Trina Johnson, a business owner who is winning at her game, and help you get to know her better with some personal and fun questions.
Trina Johnson, owner of Trinos Menswear, Regina
Where did you grow up/what schools did you attend? I grew up in Oliver B.C, located in the Okanagan. I attended Tuc-el-Nuit Elementary School and then moved to Regina and attended Thom Collegiate for high school.
What led you into this business/career? I have been on several career paths which most involved my passion for art and creative thinking. This industry allows me to work with colour pallets, patterns and unique combinations — and I also enjoy helping people! I have loved going to work every day for the past 11.5 years since I opened Trinos Menswear.
What do you love most about your business? I love the people I see every day and finding clients the perfect outfits.
What is your most important characteristic? My outgoing friendly personality.
How do you support the community/social causes? I regularly donate silent auction items to local fundraiser/charity events and offer business sponsorship of local causes whenever I can.
What do you value in your friends? Being reliable; if I ever need them to be there for me, they would jump as I also would. Even when we don’t see each other much, we pick up right where we left off.
Who is the living person that you admire most? My mom she is a sweetheart! So, patient and kind — she would have to be, she raised me!
What one piece of advice would you give your younger self? You are going to make a ton of mistakes throughout your life, so make sure you take a lesson and learn from each one and simply just do better!
Let’s talk favourites: Vacation - I love the Okanagan wine tours.
Book – Eat, Pray, Love
Movie – Eat, Pray, Love and Avatar
Song - Try by Pink
Food - Pizza
Dessert - Cheesecake
Vehicle - DeLorean
Way to relax - Painting
What is your motto? Stop saying I wish and start saying I will.
What talent would you like to have? I would love to be able to teleport.
How did you know you were on the right path? I knew I was on the right path because no matter how tough it was and is at times, I still feel happy and look forward to each day!
Do you ever consider closing your doors? What business advice would you give to others? Closing my doors has never been a consideration. At times, I second guess myself or worry, but I know that feeling will pass and tomorrow will be better. Entrepreneurship and owning your own business can be lonely, and the decisions and troubleshooting can be a lot to carry alone, but the best thing I ever did was build friendships with other small business owners.
