Il Divo Romances Regina
It’s been 15 years since reality TV judge and mega-producer Simon Cowell first discovered and mentored Il Divo, the global sensation made up of Spain’s Carlos Marin, Switzerland’s Urs Buhler, France’s Sebastien Izambard and America’s David Miller.
Since then, Il Divo have evolved into a powerhouse vocal group with four sold-out world tours, more than 30 million albums sold and 160 gold and platinum albums in 35 countries. The quartet pioneered the genre of operatic pop, or “popera,” in classical crossover music, and they are the first such artists to have an album debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. In 2006, they were listed by Guinness World Records as the most commercially successful classical crossover group in international music history.
It was a memorable evening in Regina on March 4 when Il Divo kicked off the second leg of their 2019 six-continent Timeless tour. The audience was treated to songs from their most recent album Timeless as well as their extensive catalogue of song interpretations. With a variety of video elements and songs in four languages, the performance was dramatic, evocative and breathtaking. Masters of being outside the box, this powerhouse group is well known for revamping music that people are already familiar with — and songs like Unbreak My Heart were a hit with the adoring Regina audience.
It was stunning to hear this blend of powerful, harmonious voices in the pristine acoustical setting of the Conexus Arts Centre, knowing they have sung with the likes of fellow superstars Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand and performed for various heads of state like U.S. presidents and Her Majesty the Queen — one of those “pinch me” moments when you know you’ve been in the presence of angels.
