With every change of season, we gain a new outlook and perspective — and this fall at Metric Design Centre is no different. The warmth and vibrancy of this season’s colours are inspiring us to shake things up a little! We’re looking at some of the newest trends in design, which are all centred around bringing personality into your space by adding a little — or a lot! — of fun through bold colour, big patterns and personal touches.

Your space should be a reflection of you, so don’t be afraid to make it personal. Think about items or elements that evoke an emotional response, something that puts a smile on your face. This can be a colour — whether on-trend or not — a unique piece of furniture, quirky decor items, or comical artwork. Identifying one or two special pieces in your space lays a solid foundation for the overall design.

Say Hello to Colour

Monochromatic minimalism continues to be on the way out, as bold colours are showing up everywhere and making a statement. But monochromatic does not have to be greyscale. Using gradients of any colour will achieve that minimalist feel, but let’s face it, isn’t blue way more fun than white?

If you find the idea of primary colour walls a little overwhelming, don’t worry, you can keep the white walls and bring colour in with dramatic pops of a single tone. For the truly adventurous, we recommend colour blocking with multiple tones. Why not combine aqua blue, goldenrod and hot pink!

Get Close Up

Wallpaper is an easy and effective way to personalize your space, but rather than going with store-bought rolls, try creating your own. The technology of today allows us to go far beyond the repetitive prints we are used to. Custom is easier than ever with wall-covering manufacturing that offers made-to-order custom murals, created with the work of artists and photographers.

For total personalization, explore creating mural wallcoverings with your own personal photographs or even your children's artwork. For big, bold focal points, take a particular detail and blow it up. Rather than a tiny floral print, zoom in on the centre of the flower, and have that take up the entire wall. There really are no limits to what you can do!

Work With the Best

To take your eclectic design to the next level, consider working with an artistic professional, be it a designer or an artist. Give the person the freedom to do something a bit off-the-wall and watch them respond with enthusiasm and creative energy. Although it can be hard to let go of the reigns when it comes to your space, someone with an artistic eye will be able to see things in a different light and bring out expressive and imaginative influences.

At Metric, we spend a lot of time engaging with our clients and understanding what makes them happy. Every client is individual, and we love to bring that out through the design process! Designing spaces that are representations of our clients is our top priority, and with these new trends, we can’t wait to let that shine through.
