PRETTY CITY: International Makeup Artists Come to Regina
On August 16, Sara Lindsay The Makeup Store, hosted Artists of Class, a hands-on workshop for makeup artists. The day prior, we also hosted Elevating Your Beauty for our clients and members of the public wanting to learn some tips and tricks for creating an everyday or evening look. Produced by Erica Carr Global from the U.S., some of the industry’s best artists flew to Regina from New York and Los Angeles for this incredible event.
Gregory Arlt is the Makeup Director for MAC Cosmetics LA, and works with celebrities such as Dita Von Teese, Angelina Jolie and Gwen Stefani. His humour and charm created a successful first day as he shared a look that everyone can achieve followed by red carpet beauty in the afternoon.
Day Two was also incredible. It started with MAC Cosmetics Director of Makeup New York, Romero Jennings, who showed the audience how to create an editorial look. He used some of his handmade lashes that he is famous for, and his sweet disposition and talent were amazing.
The second half of Day Two was led by Roshar, an international makeup artist who does everything from beauty to extreme avant-garde looks. He shared how to block out an eyebrow and continued to create an extreme look that was both beautiful and mesmerizing.
It was surreal to have such amazing talent right here in our city and we are pleased to say that they had such a wonderful time, they all agreed they will definitely be back to offer another workshop. I’d like to thank Erica Carr for taking a chance on our smaller market and making this happen. It was a huge success and we are grateful to all involved.
We would like to thank Hannah and Destiny of Edge Agency for modelling for the artists. We also extend appreciation to our neighbour, Two Fifty Two Boutique, for supplying wardrobe; Greenspot Cafe for the fabulous catering; Fresh & Sweet for incredible cupcakes; GES for décor, and Wascana Flower Shoppe for the floral that made the store look so beautiful. And finally — a big shout-out to our very own Dominika for her work preparing and then facilitating these two special days with us.

Advice from the Artists
By Sherry Lee
What a fun event to step into at Sara Lindsay The Makeup Store on August 15 and 16 — a roomful of people intently learning and creating unique looks under the tutelage of renowned international makeup artists, Erica Carr, Gregory Arlt, Romero Jennings and Roshar. I spoke one-on-one with each of these experienced artists to find out more about their globetrotting lives and get makeup advice for the everyday woman.
A hair and makeup artist for more than two decades, Erica started Erica Carr Global in 2016 in Portland, Oregon (www.imgoingtoclass.com) and takes workshops around the world. “Because I know both artistry and the business side, I started to find underserved markets. We go where there are artists that want to live a creative lifestyle, but don't have the next level of education beyond schooling. We want to bring education to them so they can live the life that they want to live.” Her makeup advice? “For the artists out there, just be yourself and do your best in your artistry. There are so many artists out there, so you do need to stand out and by being yourself — that is your power.”
Director of Makeup Artistry for MAC Cosmetics Los Angeles, Gregory mostly works editorial fashion, celebrities and red carpet events. “I educate with MAC, but also align with Erica because she's got such an incredible message and organization and I like what she's doing. There are not a lot of places people can go to learn beauty makeup, red carpet makeup, event makeup, bridal makeup.”
He advises: “Use your imagination. Don’t overthink it. Women look at makeup more as a cure than as an enhancement. Don’t be afraid to take chances because at the end of the day, it washes off. It's the ultimate disposable accessory. Get your skin looking good, then concentrate on the areas of mobility, the eyes and lips.” About Sara Lindsay, he says: “Sara is total seasoned pro. She is one of the best of the best.”
MAC Cosmetics Director of Makeup Artistry New York, Romero started his journey as a makeup artist in Japan. He has “keyed” (main makeup artist) at numerous international fashion events, including the CFDA in New York. “I’m really excited because it's the next generation. That's what's so important to me.” Known for creating one-of-a-kind eyelashes out of paper, Romero challenged participants to maximize their unique potential and encouraged them to collaborate to elevate each other together.
He has this advice for the everyday woman: “We all need to take care of our skin… exfoliation, have a great foundation, a good concealer. Makeup can give you power, confidence and should make you feel like you've put your armour on and you're ready to face the world. Take a photo of what you've done and then decide if you need more or less. Use your camera as a tool.” About Erica Carr Global, he adds: “It's learning for all of us in a safe environment. It's not teacher to student, it's just artistry, and Erica brings that to her team.” Romero has praise for Sara Lindsay: “Sara is amazing and what she has here is incredible.”
An international makeup artist who works primarily in the fashion industry, Roshar’s specialty is “complete transformation and things that are borderline avant-garde to beauty.” He adds: “I loved to draw and paint when growing up, so looking at the way light would hit and manipulate objects was something very fascinating to me. It really lent itself to how I approach makeup these days. I utilize light as far as contour and highlighting goes... I think it's important for everybody to understand the anatomy of the face."
“I had everyone telling me I had to do it a certain way to have a makeup career. I didn't listen to any of them. Because I was the only one doing it this way, that's how I created a niche for myself. A draw develops for it. I approach things so differently and organically, I seem to fit in with Erica's group. I have something different to bring to the table. I love doing classes because I learn a little bit of why I do something because now I'm explaining it.”
To the everyday woman, he says: “Don't be afraid to try things because that's how we learn. Use key products like a silicone based foundation… they are actually self-setting and don't melt off if you sweat. You don’t have to reapply so much. Don't shy away from having fun with lip colour; it’s the one thing everyone can play and have fun with and not feel so committed to. If you are afraid to experiment with eye shadow colours, never forego mascara. It's always going to give a youthful appearance, make the eyes look larger and intensify eye colour.”
It was simply amazing to have an event like this in Regina, and Refined Regina congratulates Sara Lindsay for helping to make this happen. Stay tuned for more of this world-class training returning to our Queen City!
