August is officially upon us, and with it comes the last month of summer. Make this August memorable by trying a new activity, spending a weekend relaxing with loved ones, or attending an exciting event. Saskatoon and Regina are both beautiful places to spend the summer months, so be sure to make the most of the lingering warm days with the best events, festivals, activities and more.
Saskatoon Experiences for Your Bucket List
Black Fox Farm & Distillery Flower Festivals: Local farm and distillery Black Fox hosts two flower festivals in August: the Gladiola Festival on August 18 and the Sunflower Festival on August 24. It’s an opportunity to walk through row on row of gorgeous flowers in full bloom, pick a bucketful of your favourites to take home — and as a bonus, the incredible colours make for a delightful photo backdrop, too.
Swinging on the Saskatchewan: Now’s your chance to improve your dance skills with Saskatoon Lindy Hop’s Swinging on the Saskatchewan, which is a free drop-in swing dance class at River Landing. The lesson runs from 7-8 p.m. every Tuesday until September 24, followed by social dancing until 10:30 p.m. This is a great activity to do with friends, your partner, or even as a date with someone new!
YXE Beer Wars: Cap off the month with the YXE Beer Wars festival on August 23 and 24, which is dedicated to craft beer, wine and spirits, and also features live music and food trucks. Located at Kiwanis Memorial Park North, this 19+ event means you can enjoy your favourite local beverages all in one place, while soaking up one of the last weekends of summer.
Rooftop Yoga & Wine: The Remai Modern has partnered with YXE’s Modo Yoga to bring you Rooftop Yoga & Wine at the Remai. Enjoy yoga with a stunning view of the river at 8 p.m., followed by wine on the rooftop terrace. August’s classes are on the 6th and 20th, and all levels are welcome.
Rock the River Festival: YXE’s classic rock festival runs from August 16 to 18 at the Delta Bessborough Gardens. It’s a perfect mid-month “pick-me-up” to experience the downtown and river valley in the summer, and enjoy music from artists and bands like Loverboy, Colin James and Blue Oyster Cult.
Bucket List Fun in Regina
Summer Concert Series: Regina Downtown’s Summer Concert Series features live music throughout the downtown all summer at various locations. In August, you can catch live music on the 8th at Beer Bros Gastropub, at The Cure Kitchen and Bar on the 17th, and at Victoria’s Tavern on the 31st. All events run from 6 to 10 p.m.
Symphony Under the Sky: On August 24, check out the Regina Symphony Orchestra’s Symphony Under the Sky event, which kicks off at 10 a.m. at the Motherwell Homestead National Historic Site. It’s a day full of live music, and this year’s event is in celebration of Louis Riel’s 175th birthday and the international year of Indigenous languages.
Cinema Under the Stars: Enjoy some family fun or a date night with a free outdoor movie at Victoria Park. Monsters, Inc is playing on August 14, and on August 21 you can catch Captain Marvel. Movies start at dusk, but be sure to get there early for the pre-show, which starts at 7 p.m. and includes music, crafts and kid-friendly activities.
City Square Plaza Zumba or Yoga: Catch an outdoor fitness class at YQR’s City Square Plaza before the summer’s over. On August 14, 21 and 28, check out Yoga in the Park from 12-1 p.m., hosted by Yoga Mala. For a lively cardio dance fitness class, try the Zumba on the Plaza classes on August 19 and 26 from 7-8 p.m. All levels are welcome to both classes.
Heritage Regina Summer Walking Tours: Spend some time this summer learning more about the city’s history with Heritage Regina’s 2019 Summer Walking Tours. There are six tours to choose from in August, including “Secrets of the Government House” on August 17 at 6 p.m. and “Lost Buildings in Regina” on August 24 at 6 p.m., which will explore Regina’s earliest years.
A Musical in Saskatoon & Regina to Put on Your Bucket List
Check out the musical Rent this summer, which is on its 20th-anniversary tour. The show stops in Saskatoon at TCU Place on August 20 and 21, and then travels to Regina for a show on August 23 at Conexus Arts Centre. This award-winning rock musical is sure to be an incredible way to cap off and celebrate the summer.
